Canadian Men’s Health Month: Minister Shandro
2021-06-09

“The Canadian Men’s Health Foundation reports that 72 per cent of Canadian men have unhealthy habits, putting them at risk for chronic conditions and diseases. We also know men may be more likely to minimize health concerns and less likely to seek health-care services – especially when those concerns relate to mental health.

“Stress, anxiety, and loneliness are at an all-time high for men and their families since the pandemic started, and that’s why ‘Move for Your Mental Health' is the theme of this year’s awareness month. Throughout the month of June, I encourage all men to join the free virtual presentations and fitness classes offered, learn more about coping strategies and consider the advice provided by health and fitness experts, all of which are available through the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation website.

“In June, we also celebrate Father’s Day. On that day, we honour fathers who are caring for their families as well as men who are fulfilling a non-traditional role, perhaps as a father figure or sharing their wisdom as a mentor or providing guidance in other ways. It’s the perfect time for us to express our gratitude to these men and to encourage their self-care.

“Please join me in urging all men to take time for their health and well-being, and to seek the help of health professionals when needed.

“If you or someone you know requires mental health support, help is available. Call the Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is free, confidential and anonymous.”
