Health Canada is consulting Canadians over the next 45 days on its proposed special review decision to continue registration of clothianidin, thiamethoxam and imidacloprid products for sale and use on cucurbits in Canada.

Clothianidin, thiamethoxam and imidacloprid are systemic neonicotinoid insecticides registered for commercial use in Canada on a variety of agricultural crops, including cucurbits.

Since the initiation of this special review in 2014, the cucurbit registered use pattern has been reviewed as part of several re-evaluation and special review decisions. Many of these reviews resulted in changes to the registered use pattern on cucurbits.

The evaluation of available scientific information related to the aspects of concern that prompted this special review on squash bees indicates that the potential environmental risks are considered to be acceptable under current conditions of use in Canada, taking into consideration changes since 2014, which included additional mitigation measures.

For a list of products containing clothianidin, thiamethoxam or imidacloprid for cucurbit use in Canada, please consult Appendix I in the PSRD or visit the Pesticide Label Search database.

For more information on the proposed decision open the “Proposed Special Review Decision”.
