Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
The 4.5-km2 site of the “former Saint-Bruno range,” which belongs to the Department of National Defence (DND), is currently being divested and has not been used for some time by DND;
DND is working to reduce the risks of unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) at former military sites to make these areas safe;
Part of the site, including an area already divested to the Government of Quebec, is undergoing UXO removal and decontamination work, which shows that divestment can take place before decontamination work has been completed;
The UXO assessment report remains unavailable, making it impossible to know how dangerous the site is, even though the public used it until it was closed in 2017;
Trails that were rerouted to comply with the ministerial order regarding the western chorus frog (SOR/2018-169) are closed to the public; and
Mont-Saint-Bruno provincial park, located in the riding of Montarville, is a jewel of the metropolitan area and the smallest provincial park in Quebec, but also the busiest, putting a great deal of pressure on its flora and fauna.
We, the undersigned, residents of Quebec, call upon the Government of Canada to take action to promptly transfer the site to the Government of Quebec for incorporation into Mont-Saint-Bruno provincial park so that it is protected from real estate development and expands the area helping to preserve biodiversity and maximize our region’s recreational tourism potential.
