Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
The courts forced the government to legislate Medical Assistance in Dying;
MAiD is a valid procedure for those who are suffering and in a state of irreversible pain;
MAiD is a way of providing a dignified death;
The Canada Disability Benefit does little to address the seriousness about the poverty that disabled people live under;
During COVID-19 the government recognized that $2000 a month was the bare minimum needed to survive; and
The Canadian government is providing a dignified way of death, but not life.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities to prioritize being disabled with a dignified life by immediately instituting a Canada Disability Benefit that would allow disabled people to live with dignity before they have a dignified death. We are calling on the minister to raise the Canada Disability Benefit to what the government acknowledged was "the bare minimum" needed to survive: $2000 a month.
