Canada and Ontario invest over $14.2 million in five community and Indigenous education broadband infrastructure projects across Northern Ontario

Joint federal and provincial funding through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan will support five community and education projects across Northern Ontario.

The Government of Canada is investing over $11.3 million in these projects through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Ontario is providing over $2.8 million.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) and all NAN member communities

This project includes the purchase and installation of connectivity kits for student learning hubs and homes in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation allowing students to connect to low earth orbit satellites, and develop cloud-based servers to enable secure access to school websites and provide cyber-security protections.

Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council (AKRC) ICIP Student Internet Connectivity Project

Co-ultimate recipients are AKRC and all member communities: Animakee Wa Zhing #37 First Nation, Big Grassy First Nation, Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, Anishinabe of Wauzhushk Onigum, Northwest Angle No 33 First Nation

Funding will support purchase and installation of connectivity kits throughout five First Nations communities, allowing access to low-earth orbiting satellites, and develop support for secure access to school websites. Once complete the project will provide a more stable internet connection for students and will provide access to online mental health support.

Anishinaabeg of Naongashiing, Couchiching First Nation, Lac La Croix First Nation, Mitaanjigamiing First Nation, Naicatchewenin First Nation, Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation, Rainy River First Nation, Seine River First Nation

The project will provide secure internet connectivity to students to attend school remotely and provide access to online mental health support in eight First Nations in Ontario. Work includes the installation of satellite dishes in six First Nations communities and connecting fibre cables in two First Nations communities. Once complete, the project will provide secure access to school websites and cyber-security protections.

Flood Mitigation for Berglund Road

Township of Machin

Funding will support modifications to Berglund Road in the Township of Machin, including upgrades to the existing culverts in addition to the installation of new culverts, and increases to the height of the road subgrade and gravel. Once complete, the project will improve ditching and allow for improved flood mitigation.

Redevelopment of Ignace Landfill Facility

Township of Ignace

This project will repair, upgrade and expand the landfill facility in the Township of Ignace. Work will expand the landfill attendant transfer facility for employees, and install security cameras, commercial recycling bins, and a vehicle weight scale system and gates.
