Petition to the Government of Canada
  Whereas:

    The Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act has defined the terms “Made in Canada” and “Product of Canada” and these are regulated separately by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Competition Bureau as they apply to both food and non-food items;
    Many Canadians struggle to identify goods that are partially or wholly manufactured in Canada due to international supply chains and complicated labelling requirements for consumer goods;
    The maple leaf is a symbol of Canadian pride, and its usage is allowed on food packaging, which can add to confusion about a product’s country of origin or processing;
    A standardized visual aid for “Made in Canada” and “Product of Canada” for both food and non-food items would allow Canadians to more easily identify and purchase goods manufactured here; and
    There would be no changes required to the definition of these terms or their regulation under the CPLA, merely accompanying visual aids that align with the existing framework.

    We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to create a set of standardized bilingual visual aids to align with the “Made in Canada” and “Product of Canada” definitions for usage on both food and non-food items, for the benefit of consumers and companies that choose to manufacture in Canada.
