Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day: Joint statement
2021-09-07

“One hundred and thirty years ago, the first immigrants from Ukraine arrived in Canada, then settled in Alberta. Their names were Ivan Pylypiw and Vasyl Eleniak. Their arrival in this province was the start of a remarkable community that has continued to grow as new Ukrainian immigrants make their homes here.

“At one point, people of Ukrainian heritage made up almost one-quarter of Alberta’s population, showing just how important this cultural group has been to the growth and development of Alberta.

“Alberta’s unique cultural identity is made up of the contributions of people of many different cultures and backgrounds. Celebrating this important date, and the many cultures in this province, help us strengthen our communities and work together to build our shared future.

“Happy Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day!”
