RLAN use in the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands - consultation 12/2021

Internationally, many countries have been looking at making the 6 GHz band (5925–7125 MHz) available for use by radio local area network (RLAN) equipment. Some countries, including the US and UK, have already made changes to allow this equipment in the band. The main reason behind these changes is to enable use of devices using the next generation of wi-fi, known as ‘Wi-Fi 6e’.

We are consulting on the possibility of allowing RLAN equipment to operate in the 6 GHz band – or part of it – in Australia. We are also considering current arrangements for RLAN devices in part of the nearby 5 GHz band, to potentially reflect recent changes to international regulations.

We invite comments on the issues set out in this discussion paper.
