Family Violence Prevention Month: Joint statement
2021-11-01

“November is Family Violence Prevention Month. Every year, Albertans recognize this month as an opportunity to start conversations about the devastating impacts of family violence and learn #WhereToTurn for support if they are at risk. We encourage Albertans to know the effects, behaviours and warning signs of violence and speak out when you see violence happening.

“Family violence can happen to anyone, regardless of their age, ethnicity, education, sexual orientation or gender. We all can work together to make sure anyone at risk can get the help they need.

“Family Resource Networks across Alberta provide high-quality, targeted prevention and early intervention supports and services to help strengthen families to help them become more resilient.

“Albertans can find more information about services provided through Family Resource Networks and learn how to connect with a network by visiting alberta.ca/family-resource-networks.aspx

“Additionally, Children’s Services can work with families when they need additional supports to make sure their children’s safety and needs are being met. Child intervention practitioners connect children and families to resources, services and supports that will help them address issues contributing to violence.

“Alberta’s government is committed to protecting Albertans experiencing family violence with services and supports across the province through emergency shelters and many community organizations. In addition, Clare’s Law was implemented this year. This important new tool may help anyone who feels at risk of violence get information about an intimate partner’s potentially violent past.

“Albertans can also get connected to supports closest to them by calling the Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818, which is available 24-7 in more than 170 languages. Online resources are available and have been translated into Chinese, Arabic, French, Hindi and numerous other languages to support Albertans whose first language may not be English.

“We encourage all Albertans to #GoPurpleAB throughout the month of November to show their commitment to supporting people experiencing family violence. More information on Family Violence Prevention Month resources, downloads and events can be found online.”
