November 18, 2021 Child and Youth Advocate Search CY-15

5 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2021 Title: Thursday, November 18, 2021 cy [Mr. Schow in the chair]

The Chair: Okay. Good evening, everyone. I’d like to call this meeting of the Select Special Child and Youth Advocate Search Committee to order and welcome everyone in attendance. My name is Joseph Schow. I’m the MLA for Cardston-Siksika and chair of the committee. I’d like to ask that members and those joining the committee at the table introduce themselves for the record, following which we’ll go to those who are joining us remotely. We’ll begin to my right.

Mr. Jones: Matt Jones, MLA, Calgary-South East.

Mr. Smith: Mark Smith, MLA, Drayton Valley-Devon.

Mr. Jeremy Nixon: Jeremy Nixon, Calgary-Klein.

Mr. Turton: Good afternoon, everyone. Searle Turton, MLA for Spruce Grove-Stony Plain.

Ms Lovely: Hello, everyone. Jackie Lovely, Camrose constituency.

Mr. Sabir: Irfan Sabir, MLA, Calgary-McCall.

Mr. Steinbach: Jeff Steinbach, executive search, Public Service Commission.

Mrs. Ellerby: Dot Ellerby, executive search, Public Service Commission.

Ms Rempel: Jody Rempel, committee clerk.

The Chair: Thank you to all those joining us in person. Now we’ll go to those who are joining us remotely. Ms Goehring.

Ms Goehring: Hi. Nicole Goehring, MLA for Edmonton-Castle Downs.

The Chair: Thank you. Ms Pancholi.

Ms Pancholi: Good afternoon. Rakhi Pancholi, MLA, Edmonton- Whitemud.

The Chair: Thank you. There are no substitutions today to note. A few housekeeping items to address before we turn to the business at hand. I’d remind everyone of the current committee room protocols, which require that all those attending a committee meeting in person must wear a mask at all times unless they are speaking and that all attendees maintain an appropriate distance between themselves and other participants. Note that the microphones are operated by Hansard. Unless we move in camera, committee proceedings are being live streamed on the Internet and broadcast on Alberta Assembly TV.

Committee members are reminded to please leave your camera on when you are speaking. Please turn all cellphones and other devices to silent for the duration of the meeting. Item 2, the agenda. I would like to ask if I could have a member move a motion to adopt the agenda. I see Ms Lovely has moved that the November 18, 2021, meeting agenda of the Select Special Child and Youth Advocate Search Committee be adopted as circulated. All those in favour? Any opposed? I will just say that when we’re calling votes, I won’t distinguish between those who are here in person and those remotely, so if you have a vote, whether you’re in person or not, just state your position on the vote. I don’t need to call on you individually. That motion is passed. Minutes of the previous meeting. We have draft minutes from our last meeting. Are there any errors or omissions to note? Okay. I’m hearing none. Can I get someone to move a motion to adopt these, please? I see Mr. Turton has moved that the minutes of the October 21, 2021, meeting of the Select Special Child and Youth Advocate Search Committee be adopted as circulated. All those in favour, please say aye. Any opposed, please say no. That motion is carried. Item 4, consideration of candidates. Today we will continue reviewing the applications received for the position of the Child and Youth Advocate. To maintain the confidentiality of the applicants, it would be appropriate to continue our discussions in camera. To do so, I would like to ask if a member would move that motion to move in camera. Mr. Smith has moved that the Select Special Child and Youth Advocate Search Committee and the representatives from executive search move in camera. All those in favour, please say aye. Any opposed, please say no. That motion is carried. We’ll just take a quick moment as we have staff and others exit the room.

[The committee met in camera from 5:03 p.m. to 6:07 p.m.]

The Chair: Okay. Thank you, everyone. We’re now back on the record. Do members have anything for discussion or under any other business? If not, then we’ll move on to the date of the next meeting, which will be at the call of the chair after we discuss with other members, sometime in early December. Can I get a member to make a motion to adjourn, please? Not everyone at once.

Mr. Sabir: So moved.

The Chair: Mr. Sabir has moved that the November 18, 2021, meeting of the Select Special Child and Youth Advocate Search Committee be adjourned. All those in favour, please say aye. Any opposed, please say no. This meeting is adjourned. Everyone, please travel safe.

[The committee adjourned at 6:08 p.m.]
