International Human Rights Day: Joint Statement
2021-12-10

“As we observe International Human Rights Day, I am grateful that Albertans continue to promote equality and justice around the world, including here at home.

“Preserving and promoting human rights means building an effective, cohesive system of supports and tools to reduce discrimination in all its forms. Our government has eagerly taken on this work and is fully committed to protecting human rights and empowering vulnerable people.

“I ask all Albertans to continue to stand up for the vulnerable against those who commit acts of hatred and deny people their human dignity. And I thank them for all they do to better our beloved province and our country.”

Kaycee Madu, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General

“On International Human Rights Day, we also mark the end of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. Recognizing campaigns such as 16 Days of Activism helps focus our attention on the domestic, sexual and gender-based violence that thrives in secrecy and silence. The only way we can make our communities safer for everyone is by working together. I call on Albertans to take a stand and speak up against gender-based violence when they witness harassment, exploitation or abuse. We all need to support survivors and be part of the solution to end violence against women and girls.”

Whitney Issik, Associate Minister of Status of Women
