THE JURY (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2015

AN ACT to amend the Jury Act, 2009.

ENACTED by the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda as follows:

1. Short title

This Act may be cited as the Jury (Amendment) Act, 2015.

2. Interpretation

In this Act—

“principal Act” means the Jury Act, 2009 No. 6 of 2009.

3. Amendment of section 4

The principal Act is amended in section .4 by repealing the entire section and substituting the

following—

“A person who has attained the age of 18 years and over is, unless exempted or disqualified under

section 5 and 6, liable to serve as a juror.”.

4. Amendment of First Schedule

The principal Act is amended in the First Schedule by repealing paragraph 4 starting with the

words “Secretary to the Cabinet” and substituting the following—

“Secretary to the Cabinet, Chief Establishment Officer, Financial Secretary, Solicitor General,

Permanent Secretaries, Senior Assistant Secretaries, and other heads of division of government

departments.”.

EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM

This Bill seeks to amend the Jury Act 2009 by removing the upper age limit of Seventy years as

the maximum age for someone to qualify as a Juror.

The First Schedule has been amended so that some but not all persons holding a public office that

is set out in the First Schedule to the Civil Service Act are exempt.
