New Judges Appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice

Attorney General Doug Downey announced the appointment of two judges to the Ontario Court of Justice, effective April 14, 2022.

Justice Wiriranai Kapurura was called to the bar in 2009. His firm, Kapurura Law Office, serves marginalized and vulnerable community members in family and child protection law. Justice Kapurura conducted motions and trials for victims of domestic violence and individuals with mental health challenges. He also worked at the Office of the Children’s Lawyer, interviewing and representing children in Ontario. As duty counsel, he assisted self-represented litigants with their appearances in domestic and child welfare court.

Justice Kapurura volunteers at Don Valley Community Legal Services, helping low-income individuals prepare documents such as OSAP and income verification affidavits and notarizations. He participates in fundraising campaigns to help the Karanda Mission Hospital in Zimbabwe purchase medication and medical equipment. He is also involved with the Zim-Ontario Information Networking Association, assisting people of Zimbabwean heritage in Ontario with legal information, networking and referrals for counselling services.

Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve has assigned Justice Kapurura to Toronto.

Justice Colin Daniel McMorrow was called to the bar in 2011 in Ontario and 2013 in Newfoundland and Labrador. As an assistant Crown attorney in Nipissing and a Crown attorney in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Justice McMorrow conducted criminal prosecutions before Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial courts and Superior Courts of Justice. He handled screening and disclosure, completed settlement and judicial pre-trial conferences and acted as a liaison between the various justice system stakeholders. As duty counsel for Legal Aid Ontario, Justice McMorrow represented clients during bail and sentencing hearings. He has also represented family and criminal law clients in Ontario.

Justice McMorrow led tours at Vimy Ridge National Historic Site of Canada and Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial National Historic Site of Canada, teaching visitors from around the world about World War I battlefields. He is a member of the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History, the Advocates’ Society and the Callander Public Library Capital Campaign’s strategic planning committee. He is also the second vice president of the Capitol Centre, North Bay’s theatre and arts community centre.

Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve has assigned Justice McMorrow to North Bay.
