Investigations concluded into two separate files involving individuals who died during interactions with police

On June 19, 2019, pursuant to Section 46.1 of the Police Act, ASIRT was directed to enter into an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a female during the attempted apprehension of her by officers of the Calgary Police Service during the execution of a warrant on an apartment. ASIRT’s investigation is now concluded.

On Jan. 31, 2021, pursuant to Section 46.1 of the Police Act, ASIRT was directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding an interaction between police officers of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and a male individual. The male had gone into medical distress during his arrest on Jan. 31 and ultimately died on Feb. 7. ASIRT’s investigation is now concluded.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
