NIAGARA (GNB) – New Brunswick para swimmer Jesse Canney claimed a silver medal on the first day of competition Sunday at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

Canney won New Brunswick’s first medal of the summer games in the men’s 200-metre / 400-metre freestyle para event at the Eleanor Misener Aquatics Centre.

Macey Hatfield made history scoring the first-ever official goal in women’s box lacrosse competition Sunday at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

The 16-year-old Saint John resident scored a total of three goals in New Brunswick’s 8 -1 victory over Prince Edward Island. Sunday marked the first-ever women’s box lacrosse competition in the history of the Canada Games. Next week, men’s lacrosse returns to the Canada Games after a 37-year absence.

Women’s lacrosse returns to action Monday morning against Quebec.

In baseball, Team New Brunswick returns to the field twice Monday playing against Manitoba and Alberta respectively. The men’s baseball team lost 4-2 to Quebec in its first 2022 Canada Summer Games appearance.

Women’s softball defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 6-1 in Sunday’s morning match but lost 14-0 against Ontario. They play Alberta Monday.

Men’s soccer plays Prince Edward Island Monday afternoon. The soccer team played a late game Sunday night against Manitoba.

Tennis competition will see Team New Brunswick play Nova Scotia Monday in Welland. The tennis squad lost 5-0 against Saskatchewan.

Competitions in men’s and women’s beach volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s mountain bike and triathlon kick off Monday. Women’s rugby sevens makes its inaugural debut at the Canada Games today as well.
