NIAGARA (GNB) – New Brunswick para swimmer Jesse Canney became Team New Brunswick’s most decorated Canada Games athlete Tuesday night at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

Canney, of Durham Bridge, turned in a two-medal performance Tuesday, swimming to a silver medal in the men’s 100-metre backstroke para and a bronze medal in the 100-metre freestyle. He won a bronze medal Monday and a silver on Sunday.

Because of the three medals he won at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, he now has a total of seven Canada Games medals, surpassing wheelchair para-athlete Veronica Coombes who has six Canada Games medals.

Team New Brunswick’s wrestlers hit the mats Tuesday in team competition and will continue Wednesday to determine placing for potential medal bouts Thursday.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams battled Tuesday against their opponents. The women defeated Nova Scotia 66-64 and the men lost a nail biter 77-74 against Saskatchewan.

The women’s box lacrosse split two games Tuesday, defeating Saskatchewan 5-3, and losing 7-1 to Manitoba.

Men’s soccer returns to the field Thursday against Ontario in the semifinals. Triathlon, men’s and women’s beach volleyball and men’s basketball return to competition Thursday as well.

In baseball, Team New Brunswick plays against Prince Edward Island and the women’s softball plays against Nova Scotia

The tennis squad played late into Tuesday evening and won a tie breaker against Manitoba, 4 - 3.
