“Alberta’s small businesses are the backbone of our economy, employing more than 530,000 Albertans. Small businesses in Alberta also contribute more to our economy than small businesses anywhere else in Canada, injecting about $100 billion into our economy each year.

“This has been a difficult year – for many small businesses, perhaps their most difficult year yet. We know the pandemic has had a tremendous impact on our economy, and that small business owners across all sectors have, and continue to, struggle.

“Many small business owners have spent 2020 working around the clock to support their employees and their community through these uncertain times. For some, this has included finding innovative ways to quickly adapt their operations in response to public health measures, evolving consumer preferences and finding creative ways to meet the need for new products and services.

“If this year has shown us anything, it is that the ingenuity and resolve of small businesses in our province is stronger than ever. Our restaurants, retailers, live event professionals and tourism operators – to just highlight a few sectors – are hard-working Albertans who exemplify Alberta’s entrepreneurial spirit and have demonstrated optimism and resilience through one of the biggest challenges of our generation.

“Alberta’s economy depends on small businesses. They work hard, and through Alberta’s Recovery Plan and initiatives like our efforts to reduce red tape for business, the Investment and Growth Strategy, and our SME Relaunch grant, Alberta’s government is committed to working just as hard to support them.

“This year, more than ever, our small businesses also need your support. I encourage all Albertans to support the local businesses in your communities that will continue to play a key role in Alberta’s economy as we recover, and eventually grow.”
